Find Your eBay Niche

By Jesse Holmes

After you've gained some experience selling on eBay, you need to ask yourself what product category you want to focus on. Since you can buy and sell almost anything on eBay, there are hundreds of thousands of options to choose from.

When I was getting started on eBay, I didn't know what I wanted to sell either. How did I choose? Let me give you some background information. I'm a bit of a gadget geek. I usually know what electronics are going to come out before they actually do. I watch the gadget blogs and news services. For example, I keep tabs on when Apple is going to update their iPhones. I like to do this, and it works for me.

It's a natural progression for me to go from looking at the latest and greatest gizmos to start to sell consumer electronics on eBay. Some of the first items I sold on eBay were electronics related. A PlayStation 2, an old Gameboy and other computer games. I knew that electronics was my forte. Soon (after clearing out the house from sellable electronics and random items) we found an electronics wholesaler. We started to sell webcams and other computer accessories. We still sell some of the same types of products to this day.

You need to ask yourself what you like. Selling what you like will make your research and product buying a whole lot easier. Keep in mind that whatever product category you choose to enter, you will be spending a lot of time researching and figuring out which products to sell. If you sell the types of products that you like, then the "work" of researching and talking to suppliers will be easier. And, as an additional bonus, if you sell products that you like, then you can take one for yourself.

Let's say you're just getting started on eBay and you have an idea. Let's say that it doesn't work out the way you hoped. The great thing about eBay is that nothing is set in stone. If you have an idea (or no idea at all) that's ok. The main thing is to get started. You can always change direction later, but you have to start moving first. Choose an eBay category that you think you can sell in.

Think about an airplane. Often planes take off from runways in the opposite direction of where they want to go. Once the plane is up in the air, then the pilot can make adjustments. The same thing applies for you when starting an online business. Getting your little plane off the ground by selling whatever you can is the first step. Next, once you've mastered the take off and basic skills of flying, you can choose which direction you want to go.

The most important thing you can do as a beginner is to just get going. If you choose to travel in too many directions at once, you'll never get anywhere. Sell stuff around your house. Then once you've run out of stuff to sell, think about what you'd like to sell. Just choose something (maybe based on your hobbies) so you have a direction to move in.
